Trick-or-Treating Rules Every Nanny Should Know

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for children, but when you're the nanny responsible for the festivities, a little preparation goes a long way.
Before heading out, talk with the parents about their expectations, including which neighborhoods are approved, how long the children can stay out, candy restrictions and whether the children are allowed to visit friends along the way.
Younger children should always go out as early in the day as possible AND stay within arm's reach, especailly when crossing streets. Older children need clear rules about staying together, never entering a stranger's home and checking with their nanny before changing plans. Make sure costumes fit properly, shoes are comfortable and everyone has something reflective or a flashlight to help drivers see them after dark. Remind children to use sidewalks, cross at designated crossings and put phones away while walking. Also active tracking on all phones the children carry.
Most importantly, establish a simple rule before leaving the house: nobody wanders off, even if they spot the house giving out the full-size candy bars! Take the time to make any and every deviation something they WANT to share using this simple narritive: "I want to see everything too".
Once the candy collecting begins, keeping everyone safe while allowing them to enjoy the excitement is the real trick. Encourage children to say "trick or treat" and "thank you," respect homes with their lights off and remember that Halloween manners matter just as much as everyday manners.
Avoid homemade treats from unfamiliar households and save candy eating until an adult has had a chance to inspect it for damaged packaging, allergens and age-appropriate safety.
For younger children, be especially mindful of choking hazards. If you're supervising several children, count heads frequently and agree on a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.
A great nanny knows that Halloween isn't just about managing costumes, candy and curfews. It's about creating wonderful childhood memories while giving parents the peace of mind that their little ghosts and goblins are in good hands.
