The 90 Day Plan for a New Nanny or Housekeeper

The first 90 days of any new household placement are about more than learning schedules and routines. They are about building trust. Whether you have hired a nanny, housekeeper or another household professional, the first three months create the foundation for the relationship moving forward.

During the first 30 days, focus on orientation and communication. Take time to explain household expectations, preferred routines, family values and daily responsibilities. Encourage questions and remember that even experienced professionals need time to learn the unique rhythm of your home.

During days 31 through 60, shift your focus toward consistency and collaboration. By this point, your employee has likely settled into the role and begun developing relationships with family members.

This is an excellent time to schedule a formal check-in to discuss what is working well and where adjustments may be needed. Small concerns addressed early rarely become larger problems. Open conversations help everyone feel heard and create an environment where feedback is viewed as a tool for success rather than criticism.

By days 61 through 90, the goal is confidence and partnership. Your nanny or housekeeper should have a strong understanding of expectations and be able to work with increasing independence. Families often find that this is when they begin to experience the true benefit of household support. The relationship feels more natural, communication becomes easier and trust continues to grow. A thoughtful onboarding process may require a little extra effort in the beginning, but it often leads to stronger retention, greater satisfaction and a more harmonious household for years to come.
